Basic rule I used when starting out, was to avoid all "white stuff", white pasta, white bread. Include anything made with refined flour and/or refined sugars. They are almost always calorie-rich but nutrient-poor and do all kinds of bad things to your blood sugar and insulin levels.
Finally we have reached the part where most people dread the most. You don't need a gym membership to loose belly fat, so you can relax! In fact doing too many sit-ups & crunches is counter-productive. These exercise focus on the abs muscles which are well hidden below the belly fat. So your focus should be first to burn stomach fat, by doing gradual cardio activities. Activities like martial arts, dancing, soccer, swimming, boxing, all require you too engage your core regularly. All of these options force you to twist & bend at the waist a lot, which is great work for your abdominals.
